What are Chemical Peels?
Chemical peels are liquid chemical ingredients that are used to cause a chemical reaction when applied to the skin loosens the glue (desmosomes) between the cells to cause a sloughing action that will allow superficial skin cells to slough off the surface skin. Depending on the pH of the chemical and the length of time left on the skin and with the current condition of the skin, this will determine the strength of the peel and the strength of the action on the skin.

Who should not use peels?
Individuals with active skin infections in the area being treated
Active cold sores in the area
Individuals currently using retinol
People with active eczema or psoriasis
People who have skin cancer
People with uncontrolled rosacea

What is the downtime?
This will be dependent on the type of peel and the clinical endpoint the client is looking to achieve. With peels, it will vary from no downtime up to one week.
Are chemical peels painful?
No. Chemical peels that are performed by aestheticians or nurses should not be painful. There are stronger acids that can be performed by physicians which may be felt more because of the depth of penetration.
What is the post-care?
This will vary based on the type of peel that was performed. Some peels are self-neutralizing, meaning they will remain active for a certain number of hours post. Some peels will be neutralized in office. Ensuring the skin is protected with sunblock is critical as the skin will be more sun sensitive and risk of burns will increase if skin is unprotected.
